GoLion

Voltron: Defender of the Universe is actually an adapted version of anime series Beast King GoLion (sometimes referred to as The King of Beasts Golion, Hundred Beast King Five Lions, and or simply just called GoLion.) and Armored Fleet Dairugger XV in Japan. World Events Productions bought, edited, and reproduced the show for the US kid friendly audience originally created and distributed in Japan by Toei Animation Ltd.
During the editing process to make the original Japanese amine work for North American audiences a great deal of editing was needed, to remove a large degree of death, destruction, and graphic violence that could not be shown on to minors on television even by today’s standards. Unfortunately, these omitted scenes hid key elements of the story which accounted for the confusion and sometimes corniness of the endeavor.
In episodes after episode 52 where GoLion ends with the death of everyone in Doom’s royal court. Voltron, now fully in the creative control of the Americans, they commission more episodes of the series and liberally make some changes to conform to their standard.
